Nadia Belerique
The Counselor

February 8 – March 1, 2014
Opening Reception: Saturday, February 8, 2014, 2:00 – 5:00 pm

Commissioned by Gallery TPW to make a single image exhibition, with The Counselor, Nadia Belerique plays with the limits of photography. “All photographs are a hand and index finger, pointing to something else.” Belerique is interested to see what the photograph points to but is more interested in the hand (the photograph) itself. Can a photograph be a stand-in for what it depicts? A life size, cardboard cut-out of Star Trek’s Deanna Troi becomes a charming and awkward stand-in, the perfect image-object. Reworking the stand-in, Belerique’s new image teases us, asking us to linger longer in the moment when we look towards the hand that points.

Nadia Belerique

Nadia Belerique (b. 1982, lives and works in Toronto) constructs installations that engage with the poetics of perception and asks how images perform in contemporary culture. Primarily invested in questions around materiality and dematerialization through the illusion of photographs, her image-based works are often interrupted by sculptural objects. She received her MFA from the University of Guelph, is a board member at G Gallery, and has recently exhibited at such venues as Narwhal, Daniel Faria Gallery, XPACE, The Drake Hotel, and Diaz Contemporary in Toronto. She has upcoming shows at 221A in Vancouver, and Daniel Faria Gallery in Toronto for 2014.
